Summer Reading 2021 Was a Sizzling Success

Summer reading . . . pandemic style

For the second year, WCCLS transformed our summer reading program and coordinated a massive countywide book distribution program for Washington County kids. Instead of kids having to come to the library during a pandemic . . . we took our libraries to the families . . . at 62 different parks, free lunch sites and food pantries.

Here are some highlights:

  • We put 17,000 books into the hands of Washington County kids (we beat our own record of 10,000 books from last year).
  • Our member libraries gave away books at 62 free lunch sites, food pantries and public parks.
  • All 16 member library locations participated.

"It has been a joy all summer to watch kids' and teens' faces light up when they realize we are offering a book to keep!"

"A personal highlight was watching a child, maybe seven or eight years old, pick out a book for their newborn sister saying, 'We can't leave her out!'"

"Kids loved picking their own books this year. Parents thanked us for offering books in both Spanish and English."
